Unfortunately, because of my particular wants/needs, the current market of cars, and regardless of my previous misgivings, I’m probably gonna be in another aluminum-hooded Mustang. It is what it is. ¯\_()_/¯
I didn’t know this until earlier today , but dealerships can find used cars if you ask (who’da thought) , so I called the Ford dealer my parents and I have gotten cars from over the last 20-25 years and told them I wanted the following:
Manual Mustang GT
2012-2016
$19-25k budget
Any color, as long as it ISN’T Black (My anxiety will not put up with those swirls and scratches.)
This way, I’ll be dealing with the salesperson we’ve gotten our last four cars from and it’ll be a relatively easygoing experience rather than a shot in the dark with a new person, and since I was already looking at cars in other states, I won’t have to go further than 15 minutes if they find what I fancy. Covid has messed with the used car market so much, it’ll be interesting to see what they find.
As for the S550/S197 debate, it’s literally gonna come down to whether or not I’ll be fine with trading the IRS, better interior, and modern tech for the live axle and less tech (if it comes to that). I honestly like both aesthetically , especially the 2011-12 facelift. The S550 (hood aside) is pretty much perfect imo. The price delta between S197s and S550s is considerable enough it could be the deciding factor.
We’ll see how this goes.

Now is the time for a Bitching Camaro!
Fuck Ford!

2010-2015 Camaros are stupidly priced used , and 16-up cars are priced where they should be and are too much for me. Nevermind the fact that the last gen is a bloated unit with a great powertrain, shit interior, and horrible sightlines. It’s just not worth it to me. I can find more to nitpick about affordable (to me) Camaros than I can Mustangs.

Or....or, we could get SUPER WASTED and be like ‘time for a challenger!’

man, if i wasnt gettign ready to move onto the next phase of my life, id reallyyy look into selling the lexus and getting something else. preferably with 3 pedals and tail-out antics

TBH since you change dailys often enough, why not lease? Challengers seem to always have deals.

I don’t think the s197 interior is really that much better. You can find 2SS Camaro’s out there for the upper end of your budget.
What are you hoping to get for the ecoboost?

Hate leases and leasing. Shockingly, this is the longest I’ve gone without changing a daily driver. One year between the Astra and ST, two years between the ST and Mustang, and I’ve had the latter over four years now.
![]() 08/26/2020 at 15:04 |

4 years?! Damn, time flies when you’ re reading comments on the internet.
![]() 08/26/2020 at 15:05 |

It’s probably not that much better, but I prefer the layout and visibility in large over that generation of Camaro. Just going on Autotrader, I’ve been seeing 2010-12 Camaro 1SS’s inline with my budget, but the best of that gen is 2014-15 imo, and those are pushing into 6th gen prices from what I’ve seen around me.
I’m hoping for between $15-17k for the ecoboost with or without two sets of wheels.

What’s the next phase, and why not both?

You’re not wrong, but that’s too old to daily for my tastes. C5s would make a great weekend/summer car, but we’ve already got two of those as it is.

Yeah it’s kinda insane. I was adamant I’d hold onto the Mustang longer than any other car, and it’s finally done that as of this month actually. The 924 is a year behind it, and it’s not going anywhere.

I would take one over a Mustang any day of the week. my hate for ford is deeper than my hate for dodges.

Both ftw - love my comfy Lexus GS for daily duties and Miata for weekend hoonage.

I know the S550 is a better platform (arguments over the necessity of IRS aside) but the late S197s with the 5.0 are damn nice looking cars.

I refuse to own that yacht. But I won’t refuse driving one.

TIL. If a SS could be had for $25k, then sure. But I don’t see that happening for an other 2-4 years at best, IF it happens.
![]() 08/26/2020 at 15:19 |

That’s literally the issue between the two for me. The S550 is the better all-around platform. But the late S197s are just dead sexy (2011-12>2013-14), but is it worth the suspension? That’s what I don’t know.

Are you a hardcore track rat? Or is this just a dd to have fun with?
![]() 08/26/2020 at 15:27 |

Just a DD to have fun with. Maybe when I’ve more free time I’ll get around to more AutoX and track days. I haven’t done a track day since 2017 and AutoX since 2015ish.

because next phase is military, and living on base means I cant keep multiple cars. I would LOVE a boosted BRZ or something. But practially, i need a truck. Probably a ram or a gladiator diesel.

Did I miss something? Did you return the blue car?

I actually liked the IRS in my 14'. Made it more of a challenge to drive well at autocross.
If you get either I still have my JMS Pedalmax if you want it. Some people don't care about it but it was the perfect mod in my mind. Instant throttle response as if it wasn't drive-by-wire and reversible in moments.

OH! Oh damn, I did not see that coming. A friend of mine has a leased Gladiator Sport S (I think that’s the trim?) I’m actually impressed with it in and out. The V6 isn’t a slouch nor is the transmission. I’m curious about the diesel model. I haven’t seen one yet.
![]() 08/26/2020 at 16:25 |

I’ve still got it. Looking towards the next car though.
![]() 08/26/2020 at 16:28 |

You mean the LRA right? I can only imagine it as more challenging to drive than an IRS setup. I’m more curious about whether or not it’s a hassle and/or frustration in all areas of daily drivability. I’ve only ever driven an FB RX7, ‘90 Supercharged LX 5.0, and a ‘13 Procharged V6 automatic Mustang albeit very very brie fly. On smooth roads and casual driving , I could not tell any difference between it and IRS.

If you’re going to Moose Jaw, a truck will be a necessity. Because apparently something in the water makes men feel inadequate out here.

Shit yeah I switched them up in my mind. On regular roads occasionally a significant ditch would shoot my tail to the side but with the modern design it wasn't ever a real problem. U drove an 11' V6 and then a 14' GT year round through 4 winters in RI with WS80s and they were bulletproof.

no one has, it is new for 2021 (from what i understand, the regular wrangler is getting the diesel, so i’m guessing the gladi is as well

As far as daily drivability, there really is no difference. The rear will move around a little bit over broken pavement but anyone with any driving experience can handle it. Unless you are pushing 10/10ths on the street, it makes no difference.
![]() 08/26/2020 at 17:27 |

No worries. Heck, I thought the brief 2-mile stint I did in the V6 was more comfortable than my own car. And that car had unknown suspension mods but it was lowered some. Winter driving is a priority in Michigan, but people have driven with less and arguably worse in the last 60 or so years so it can’t be that bad; even on all seasons. That said, I’ve always had a dedicated set of winter tires since 2014 for all daily drivers.
![]() 08/26/2020 at 17:31 |

That all makes sense to me. I’ve never driven an LRA car at 10/10ths.

Seems like they're cheaper on the east coast. Guy I know with a 2ss with the recaros and brembos paid 24k and drove it back from buffalo. Looks like the new York New Jersey area has a few around that price

I have the lexus for DD and 6 bikes for weekend hoonage..i’m well set for that lol

Are they any good at finding cars though? I’ve had some dealers and salespeople who actually tried and others who basically forgot I existed after speaking with them about what I wanted.
Wuldn’t hurt to find out if they are a part of a dealer network that you can also search independently for when one hopefully comes up.
I’ ve also heard that some of the IRS cars left the factory with messed up geometry or bushings that were out of spec. How has your current car been?
![]() 08/26/2020 at 18:41 |

I’ve no idea. I’ m just assuming.hoping that’s the case as they might have acc ess to finding cars on a larger scale than I. A note was supposedly left on my salesperson’s desk with my name/number and what I’m looking for. She’s a very nice and working in dividual so I’m sure I’ll get a call within a week or two. If not, she’s expecting us within the next two months because my mom’s Explorer lease will be up and we’ll be leasing a 2020 or 2021 XLT and I’ll bring it up again. Or I could be due for an oil change before all of that. Ei ther way, things will happen.
That’s a brilliant idea! I wonder if there’s a way to do that online?
My car has been fine from what I can tell. Nothing out of the ordinary. The progressive lowering springs made the ride a bit firmer and maybe bouncier than I was expecting; so I know what I won’t be quick to do this time around.

Yeah, that’s pretty much my attitude too. The correct Challenger would no doubt have me grinning ear to ear. And there’s more than one “correct Challenger” if i’m being honest.
But I just couldn’t handle getting into THAT interior all the time and hauling around THAT kinda weight (in a two door!) I have far too much respect for my front tires for that.
